Swelling
Swelling (Oedema) in the hand and arm can be most inconvenient to say the least. It will restrict the ability to move freely, it can increase pressure and load of and on joints respectively, causing pain and restriction of function.
Common symptoms:
- Loss of creases in the skin especially over the joints
- Stiffness or reduced ability to move
Pain or ache - A feeling of heaviness in the affected part or limb which might also lead to shoulder or neck pain.
Causes:
- Injury to the hand/wrist eg a wrist fracture, ligament or muscle tear, burns and lacerations
- Various medical conditions such as Lymphoedema, Blood Clot, Pregnancy, Arthritis, Insect bites or stings and Cellulitis
Assessment:
Subjective assessment: We will ask you about your swelling symptoms, when they started as well as how and when they are affecting you. We want to know your individual daily activities and preferred sports, your general health and other potential factors that may contribute to your concerns or to your recovery. We will also ask you what activities you enjoy and what your goal is.
Objective assessment: We will look at your hand, wrist, forearm and likely shoulders and neck as well as palpating around the area. We will quantify your swelling, hand and wrist movement and your grip strength. We may refer for Imaging if needed to aid diagnosis.
Treatment:
- Education regarding your symptoms and how to manage/reduce them
- Massage – Effleurage or Manual
- Lymphatic Drainage
- Activity modification often encouraging elevation
- Custom made thermoplastic splint to protect joints in their safe position
- Compression – single use eg coban wrap or reusable eg compression gloves or custom made lycra or neoprene sleeves
- Home exercise program including stretching, movement and strengthening exercises
- Modalities such as Ultrasound and
