Injuries in kids can be very serious but also easily preventable. Here are some tips on how to prevent injuries in kids.

5 Tips to prevent Injuries

  • Monitor the weather before during & after sport
  • One size does not fit all – Get the right equipment for the sport and the person, includes footwear, helmets and taping
  • Maintenance & appropriateness of playing surface
  • Proper Preparation – Kids should participate in warm ups, cool downs, practices and training sessions prior to participation in their activity
  • The team sport or activity should be supervised by qualified adults

Common Types of Injuries

Acute Injuries

Acute injuries occur suddenly and are often associated with trauma.  These injuries include bruises, muscle injuries, ligament injuries or broken bones

Treating Acute Injuries

When treating an acute injury it is better to take a “better safe then sorry” approach. First aid should be given immediately, followed by an appointment to either the physiotherapist or a doctor depending on the injury. For serious injuries take your child to the nearest hospital emergency department.

It is important to seek the advice of a professional when an acute injury occurs. This can help to prevent these injuries from re-occurring.

Common acute injuries that can re-occur if not rehabilitated properly include

  • Ankle sprains
  • Hamstring muscle tears
  • Shoulder dislocation or subluxation

Overuse Injuries

Repetitive loading or actions that increase the stress on the bones or muscles cause overuse injuries. Overuse injuries can be caused by:

  • Growth spurts
  • Imbalances between strength and flexibility
  • Inadequate warm up
  • Poor technique
  • Unsuitable equipment e.g. shoes
  • Excessive training or activity e.g. increased intensity, duration or frequency of activity or training
Treating Overuse Injuries

Limit your child’s activity until they see a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist can determine appropriate treatment and when it is safe for your child to return to their sport or activity. Physiotherapist can diagnose overuse injuries by taking a medical history, examining the child and if needed ordering scans.

It is important to diagnose and treat overuse injuries to prevent them from turning into chronic problems.
