Incontinence Physiotherapy

Did you know that Women’s Health Physiotherapists can treat many different types of incontinence?

Incontinence can be a frustrating and often embarrassing issue, but you don’t have to live with it. In most cases, it can be significantly improved or even resolved with physiotherapy, no surgery or medication required!

Common Incontinence Symptoms

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence – leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, running or jumping.
  • Urge Urinary Incontinence – a sudden, strong urge to urinate, sometimes leading to leakage.
  • Mixed Incontinence – a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.

Potential Causes of Incontinence

  • Pregnancy and childbirth, which stretch and weaken the pelvic floor muscles and fascia
  • Hormonal changes during menopause causing thinning of the urethra
  • Chronic coughing, constipation, or heavy lifting
  • High-impact exercise or poor bladder habits

Assessment

We start our assessment the moment you enter the clinic, observing how you sit, stand, and move.

Subjective assessment:

We’ll discuss your symptoms, bladder habits, fluid intake, pregnancy or birth history, and how leakage is affecting your daily life.

Objective assessment:

We will assess your pelvic floor muscle strength, bladder control, posture, and breathing patterns. Real-time ultrasound imaging will be used to help you visualise your pelvic floor and deep core muscle activation, ensuring you learn to contract and relax the right muscles effectively. If appropriate, an internal assessment may also be offered for a more detailed evaluation of your pelvic floor function.
